The Society has a longstanding ‘sister’ relationship with the Japan-Australia Society in Nara and this was instrumental in the formation in 1993 of the formal ‘ Sister City ’ relationship between Canberra and Nara . The President of the AJS ACT is a member of the ACT Government’s Canberra - Nara Sister City Committee.

The AJS also has friendly relationships with other Japan-Australia societies, particularly those in Kobe and Kumamoto .
